this is a photo of the inauguration taken from a hi-res satellite. very cool to see all of the clusters of ant-sized people. if you look very carefully, you can see another satellite in the upper left-hand corner.
now i consider myself to be pretty un-opinionated. no one else thinks that so maybe i'm wrong.
what i do know is that i am usually pretty balanced when it comes to politics (unless it deals with the current economy). if someone favors mccain-palin or obama-biden, i am more than happy to hear someone's views, discuss with them, better understand their reasoning and further my own understanding and decisionmaking.
but i do struggle with political ads which oversimplify the candidates and the issues. for dems, obama is the change we need and mcain is four more years of the same. for the repubs, mccain is the country-first, steady-handed leader and obama is an inexperienced, political opportunist. it is never that simple but political strategists consider us that stupid and our intellectual laziness coupled with our frantic lives usually make them right.
now, proposition 8 is being boiled down to a yes vote (protecting families) and a no vote (being fair and equal to everyone). at the end of worship service this past sunday, the pastor showed this video which really moved me. now i know it's meant to startle us and we should discount some of the piece but it is really disturbing that this is a possibility if we don't vote for this proposition. spend the six minutes to watch this video and vote YES on 8 on 11/4.
sad that choi jin shil ended her life yesterday. can remember watching her in 'jil-too' way back when. reminds me of a simpler, happier time in my life and in our world (or at least korean dramas). they didn't even kiss at the end of the show...after all of that buildup and anticipation! as for me, life back then was all fun, no responsibilities...even if i didn't know it at the time. who knows perhaps i'll look back on my life now and think the same thing.
don't know why i feel strangely down about her suicide. she's just a person and being a celebrity doesn't make her a noble creature or anymore special than anyone else. it must be what she represented as hae kyung all those years ago. she was the quintessential cute, fun-loving, caring, genuine, loyal girl that every korean guy wanted to be with. she loved this guy so much that she endured all this embarrassment and heartache and in the end was even willing to let him go if it meant his greater happiness. the human embodiment of the poem 'jin-dah-rae-ggoht'. what man wouldn't want that? in any case, it's tragic that she was in such dire circumstances that she felt that ending her life was better.
this was the final scene of 'jil-too'. i still remember this like it was yesterday. can't believe it was 16 years ago!
